The original Whataburger Cruise Night, started several years ago in Tyler, TX, is a very popular outing for anyone who has a pre `73 vehicle or just wants to drop by and enjoy the scene. The cruise is on South Broadway Street in front of the Wal-Mart Super Center.
The Hot Rod Cafe itself is quite a sight to see! The restaurant is one of a chain of Whataburgers with an auto related theme owned by Doyle Thomas. He has a vast collection of classic autos, street rods, collector cars and also a large collection of auto memorabilia.
The restaurant has car dashes high up on the walls, posters, drawings of cars, lots of model cars in a display case and a real street rod parked inside! The cars are rotated out occasionally with others from Doyle’s collection.
Hot Rodders start parking as early as 4:30 PM on cruise night to get the best spots. There is plenty of parking as there is a large lot right next to the restaurant. There is a specialty theme each month such as convertible night, Mustang night, Corvette night, street rod night, Mopar night, antique night etc. The theme vehicles are lined up in front of the restaurant, and other classics are parked next to the restaurant.
A Corvette club helps sponsor the events, and there are always lots of ‘Vettes around. You can also see pro street machines, antiques, rare European cars, race cars, muscle cars of all makes, classic `50s and `60s, home-builts, motorcycles, and just about anything that can roll. Make no mistake about it though, there are some immaculate vehicles here that could compete in any car show whether you drive them or trailer them.
Professional DJ Tom Pollard belts out classic “Rock & Roll” while lots of people mill around looking and socializing. Usually, the crowds are large. Many of these people have been coming here for years and this is a monthly event they wouldn’t miss out on. It is a cruise night you can bring your whole family to.
The restaurant has plenty of staff inside to take care of the customers who line up for their meal, and also outside to keep everything well organized. There is also Police security on scene.
There have been upwards of 200 vehicles here before, and everyone has a great time. This is one solid cruise night that will undoubtedly keep going for years to come. If you’re ever in the Tyler, TX area the second Thursday evening of the month, March through November, be sure and drop by and join the fun. For more information, call 903-939-9961, or 903-535-9051.
