If you are browsing through the pages of this magazine you must be some form of an auto enthusiast and if your favorite form of automobiles begin with names like Cuda or Yenko, boy do I have a place for you to go. If muscle cars turn you on like no other breed of car you need to head to the hills of east Tennessee to a museum that is dedicated strictly to those factory big block powered cars that tore up the streets and strips during the 60's and 70's. This collection of raw horsepower can be found just a short drive off of Interstate 40 east of Knoxville on Hwy 66 in Sevierville, TN. If this city name rings a bell it should if you are into rod runs, boulevard cruises and huge car shows since they all take place in or around the Sevierville and Pigeon Forge area. The museum I'm talking about located here in the shadows of the Smokey Mountains on Highway 66 is none other than Floyd Garrett's Muscle Car Museum.
Floyd Garrett, owner of this unique museum originally hails from south Florida where he built a highly successful trucking company that hauled wood chips from local lumberyards to paper mills in the area. After Floyd became financially secure with his trucking company, he began finding and buying vintage muscle cars that he remembered from his youth. Being a wise businessman Floyd concentrated on buying up the rare and or unusual muscle cars of the 60's and 70's. Floyd began his collection in 1975 with a black 1970 Chevelle and it hasn't stopped growing since.Floyd opened the doors of this museum in 1996 and it currently contains a collection of over 90 muscle cars that are valued at over 7 million dollars and climbing. Some of the cars on display are owned by Floyd but a large number of the cars are owned by collectors from across the country who choose to share what they own with other automotive enthusiasts like yourself. The other unique trait of this museum is that with private collectors supplying cars for display the cars on display vary year to year, so if you stopped in last year you need to stop by again this year just to see what's new on display. Besides the huge collection of cars there are also loads of automotive memorabilia and rare engines on display throughout the 35,000 square foot museum. After you spend several hours looking at all of the awesome muscle cars, displays and memorabilia you can browse the 6,000 square foot gift shop that is located in the lobby of the facility.
The next time you are in the area on vacation or for Shades Of The Past Rod Run, The Grand Run, NSRA South Nationals or any of the other numerous shows that take place in the Sevierville area stop and take the tour of what has to be one of the finest collections of muscle cars in the country.
Floyd makes it real easy to find time to tour his museum by being open every day from 9:00AM-6:00PM and every day of the year except Thanksgiving and Christmas.
